Heavy battles are ongoing on the southern Ukrainian frontlines in the Zaporozhie region and in the South-Donbass direction, where the Armed Forces of Ukraine are fiercely pounding Russian defences in an attempt to gain at least some new victories on the eve of the upcoming NATO summit in Vilnius. In their turn, Russian forces began using tactics of the so-called active defence, launching local counter attacks on the advancing Ukrainian units, inflicting more losses to the enemy.

The area near the town of Orekhov remains one of the bloodiest battlefields of the war in Ukraine. The Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) continue desperate attacks on Russian positions, using a large number of manpower, supported by infantry fighting vehicles and tanks. Before the ground assault, the AFU are actively shelling Russian military positions with artillery and MLRS in several areas in order to suppress Russian defense potential. After heavy shelling Ukrainian assault groups launch attacks in an attempt to capture Russian strongholds.

On July 2, the AFU launched another attack on the village of Robotino located several kilometers south of Orekhov. Ukrainian forces managed to gain a foothold on the outskirts of the settlement for a short time, but then they were thrown back by the Russian military.

After the assault groups of the 65th Brigade of the AFU managed to reach the first line of Russian defense, an intense shooting battle broke out in the trenches. Russian forces were forces to abandon several positions, after which Ukrainian forces were heavily shelled by Russian artillery in the newly captured trenches.

Russian servicemen launched a counter attack. After several hours of fierce fighting, a significant part of the Ukrainian grouping was destroyed, other Ukrainian servicemen maged to escape.

On the morning of July, the local pro-Russian authorities declared that the village of Robotino remains under the control of the Russian military.

Captured Ukrainian servicemen

As a result of the recent attack, the AFU suffered more losses. Footage shared by the Russian military confirmed that some Ukrainian servicemen surrendered and were captured by Russian forces.

The situation remains tense in the area since the Ukrainian military is expected to continue assault attempts. The Ukrainian military is transferring reinforcements to the area. The fighting continues with tanks, artillery and mortars actively working on both sides. Meanwhile, the weather conditions allow the Russian to actively use their aviation for massive strikes on the AFU, as well as small UAVs to track the movement of Ukrainian forces in the area.

At the same time, fierce battles are ongoing on other southern frontlines. In the area of the town of Valikaya Novoselka, the Ukrainian military does not stop attempts to gain a foothold in the locality of Priyutnoye. So far, to no avail. On July 2, fierce fighting took place in the Novodonetsky area, where small groups of 8-10 Ukrainian servicemen attempted to attack Russian positions. In the Ugledar region, Ukrainian attempts of offensive operations in the area of Nikolskoye also brought no results.
