A video on Facebook (FB) is claiming to show combat footage from the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas. Not true. It is a 2015 video showing an incident involving Israeli soldiers and Palestinian youth in the West Bank.
On Nov. 21, an FB user published the video now circulating on local social media with this headline:
“Israel vs Palestine live war #war #worldwar #army #soldier #israel #palestine #gaza #bomb”
The four-minute video showed a military jeep, engulfed in flames, firing at a group of people before ramming into one of them. Military personnel are later seen pushing away people who approached the person who was run over.
A reverse image search shows that this was published in 2015 by Middle Eastern news organization Roya News. The video shows an incident in Ramallah, Palestine that resulted in Israeli forces running over a Palestinian.
Local news reports there said Israeli soldiers on a jeep rammed a Palestinian youth and prevented medical personnel and journalists from approaching the victim by spraying pepper spray. However, Israel authorities said the person allegedly approached them while holding a petrol bomb.
This old video erroneously described as recent footage emerged after Israel and Hamas ended their week-long ceasefire, during which hostages and captives were exchanged. Fighting between the two groups has resumed.
FB page Zahid Joy (created on Nov. 6) published the video, garnering over 3,500 reactions, 1,000 comments, 420 shares and 126,000 views.
