BAGUIO CITY—The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) has expressed deep concern over a recent spate of shootings in Abra, with several incidents occurring in just three weeks.
“The CHR strongly condemns these violent acts and calls for immediate action from provincial authorities to resolve these cases,” the September 26 statement read.
“We urge the swift apprehension of the perpetrators and justice for the victims. It is crucial that such incidents are dealt with urgency to prevent further escalation,” CHR added.
The CHR’s statement aligns with an earlier call from the Catholic clergy in Abra, who appealed for open dialogue among local officials and residents to address the violence. The police have reported five shooting incidents in various towns this September, with three of them resulting in the deaths of at least three people.
The CHR expressed particular concern about the potential impact of this violence on the upcoming 2025 midterm elections. The commission warned that continued unrest could instill fear in citizens, discouraging them from participating in the electoral process and threatening the integrity of free and fair elections.
“The Commission raises the alarm that these cases, if left unresolved, could foster a culture of impunity in the province, eroding trust in the justice system and public institutions,” the CHR warned.
“We call on the government to implement enhanced security measures to safeguard the community, uphold the rule of law, and ensure that the environment in Abra is conducive to the safe and peaceful exercise of voting rights,” the statement continued.
Earlier, the Abra Provincial Police Office assured the public that they are conducting a thorough investigation into the shootings. The police have also expressed confidence in their ability to maintain peace and order during the elections.
Their efforts have led to the identification and arrest of suspects involved in the attacks. Most recently, police apprehended and filed charges against two suspects for the September 1 shooting in Barangay Poblacion, Dolores. Authorities have also filed four other cases related to shootings that occurred in September. # nordis.net
