Ang Bayan Ngayon » ILPS establishes UK chapter

Democratic and anti-imperialist organizations in the United Kingdom (UK) formed a local chapter of the International League of Peoples’ Struggle (ILPS) at Goldsmiths University in London on October 6. The ILPS-UK is the latest chapter founded since the anti-imperialist league was established.

London Philippine Solidarity-Friends of the Filipino People in Struggle (LPS-FFPS) members, Anakbayan UK, and volunteers led the chapter’s formation. They reached out to anti-imperialist organizations and democratic movements in London and prepared the logistics for the assembly.

Assembly attendees include 35 individuals from Anakbayan UK, LPS-FFPS, Migrante UK, Palestinian Youth Movement, Nijjor Manush, The R.O.T Collective (formerly known as The Rights Collective), Anti-Imperialist Front UK, Union of Cypriots-UK, and PRIDE Library Manchester. Some organizations also attended as observers, such as United Voices of the World, Sekolah Merdeka, and members of the Anti-Colonial Alliance.

In its opening speech, LPS-FFPS emphasized the need for unity among organizations to support national liberation movements worldwide. ILPS-Europe also sent a delegate to the assembly, who congratulated the newly formed chapter and reported on the success of forming chapters in Belgium and the Netherlands recently. Victor Garces, ILPS Vice Chair for Internal Affairs, also attended the assembly.

The ILPS-UK and its member organizations will meet again to formalize the structure of the organization and elect the chapter’s leadership.

The chapter was formed four months after the ILPS 7th international assembly held in Malaysia in June. The assembly called for invigorating the league’s presence in various parts of the world.
