Hundreds of demonstrators gathered outside Woolwich Crown Court last June 14 as four Palestine Action activists were sentenced over their involvement in a 2024 raid on an Elbit Systems facility in the United Kingdom.
Videos from the scene showed police officers removing protesters who attempted to block surrounding roads, while supporters applauded and chanted during the arrests and removals.
The four activists were convicted after driving a former prison van into the facility and using tools to damage equipment inside. Prosecutors said the incident resulted in around £1.2 million in damages and seriously injured a police officer.
The case stemmed from a protest action carried out by members of Palestine Action, a direct-action network that targets companies linked to the ‘Israeli’ defense industry. The group said the operation aimed to disrupt the activities of Elbit Systems, ‘Israel’’s largest weapons manufacturer, over its alleged role in supplying military equipment used in Gaza.
During the trial, prosecutors argued that the activists planned the raid in advance and deliberately caused extensive destruction to property and machinery inside the facility. Authorities also presented evidence showing the group used a modified vehicle to breach the site before entering the compound and damaging equipment with sledgehammers and paint.
Defense lawyers and supporters maintained that the activists were motivated by political protest and sought to prevent what they described as complicity in alleged war crimes against Palestinians. Human rights advocates and campaign groups have since criticized the inclusion of terrorism-related considerations in the sentencing process, warning it could criminalize protest actions connected to political dissent.
