Marcos Jr administration selling out ARB lands to conglomerates – updates from the peasant movement of the Philippines

Sabin Aboitiz of the century-old Aboitiz Group is leading the Marcos administration’s Private Sector Advisory Council (PSAC) The conglomerate contributed millions to Marcoses’ campaign fund in 2022. In 2023, Aboitiz Group’s subsidiary Lima Land Inc. bought a 200-hectare property from Martin Lorenzo’s Luisita Land Corp. Aboitiz Infra Capital (AIC) started construction of the economic zone in Tarlac City last year. AIC’s is planning to convert 500 hectares of Hacienda Luisita into a special economic zone. Presented as a green energy initiative, this threatens the livelihoods of farmers and agricultural workers. The lack of consultation with agrarian reform beneficiaries has raised concerns, as the shift from agriculture to commercial use endangers long-time residents and tillers.

The Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas or Peasant Movement of the Philippines (KMP) was founded at a time of great political upheaval and broad mass movement against the tyranny and abuses of the Marcos dictatorship. Hundreds of peasant leaders and land reform advocates from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao gathered during the historic founding of KMP on July 24, 1985. After thirty five years, KMP remains as the largest national democratic mass organization of peasants in the Philippines.
