United States President Donald Trump and FIFA president Gianni Infantino were met with boos from sections of the crowd during the trophy presentation ceremony following Spain’s World Cup victory yesterday, July 19th.
Trump attended the final alongside a number of international dignitaries, including Spain’s King Felipe VI, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, and FIFA president Gianni Infantino. He watched the match from a luxury suite after arriving at the stadium aboard Marine One.
While Trump received a mixed reaction when briefly shown on the stadium’s giant screens before kickoff, the response was noticeably more hostile during the post-match presentation ceremony. As Trump and Infantino walked onto the field to present medals and the trophy, loud boos echoed around the stadium.
According to pool reports, crowd noise rose significantly when Trump appeared on the field, reflecting widespread disapproval from spectators during the ceremony.
The awkward moment continued after Spain received the trophy. Following the presentation, Trump appeared to linger beside the Spanish players as they prepared to celebrate their victory. FIFA president Infantino was then seen guiding him away from the center of the celebrations, allowing the team to continue their trophy lift without the US president on the podium.
The incident drew comparisons to last year’s Club World Cup final, where Trump similarly remained on stage after presenting the trophy to Chelsea and appeared to join the team’s celebrations, leaving players visibly puzzled.
Beyond the stadium, Spain’s victory was also celebrated by Palestinians in Gaza, where hundreds gathered in cafes and public viewing areas to watch the final despite widespread destruction, displacement, and electricity shortages caused by the ongoing war.
Large screens were set up in different parts of the besieged enclave, allowing residents to watch the match collectively. As the final whistle blew, crowds erupted in cheers and spontaneous celebrations, with many Palestinians hailing Spain’s outspoken support for Palestinian rights and its criticism of ‘Israel’s’ military actions in Gaza.
