Military Overview Of Situation In Ukraine On May 15-16, 2023: Ukrainian Military Starts To Use New Weapons

Work of Russian soldiers with APCs

The situation on the margins of the Ukrainian-Russian conflict continues to develop dynamically. Significant intensification is observed on several fronts.

On the Kupyansk sector of the front, Russian assault groups forced the Oskol River and occupied an AFU stronghold near the village of Masyutovka. Thanks to the decisive actions, full control over the eastern bank of the river in this area was established.

The AFU again used the Anglo-French Storm Shadow cruise missile to attack Luhansk. The strike damaged an abandoned building of a Ukrainian military unit in the southern part of the city. In addition, an explosive device went off in a beauty salon in the center of Luhansk. As a result of the attack, one person was killed and three were injured. Among the injured was Igor Kornet, acting head of the LPR Interior Ministry.

In Bakhmut, the Wagner PMCs continue their assault on the AFU strongholds in the multi-storey buildings in the west of the city. The advance units entered the “Konstruktor” outpost and attacked the “Gnezdo” outpost to the east from all possible directions. According to some reports, the AFU continues to attack Russian positions near Krasny. The Ukrainian command aims to reach Kleshcheevka and occupy an important fortification on the heights northwest of the village. Businessman Yevgeny Prigozhin reported later in the day that the units of the Wagner PMC had advanced another 220 meters and occupied an area of 105 thousand square meters. Thus, 1.59 square kilometers on the territory of Bakhmut are under the control of the enemy. At the same time, Wagner is engaged in returning the positions left by Russian Armed Forces units on the southern flank of the Bakhmut offensive.

Ukrainian formations continue shelling populated areas of the Donetsk agglomeration. Infrastructure and residential buildings were damaged in Volnovakha, Dokuchaievsk and central districts of Donetsk.

In the Zaporizhzhya direction, the Ukrainian armed forces twice shelled Tokmak from HIMARS MLRS. Houses and a school building were damaged, and there were civilian casualties. The Lysaya Gora nature reserve in Vasilievka was also hit by rocket artillery.

Work of Russian artillerymen in the Zaporozhye direction:

In Kherson region, an artillery strike by the Russian Armed Forces destroyed an ammunition depot of the AFU. Such ammunition as rockets to the “Olha” MLRS, to the 2A65 Msta-B howitzers, shells for firing the 122 mm D-30 howitzer, mortar shells, as well as ammunition for foreign-made artillery systems were destroyed.

Recently, the Russian Air Force has become much more intensive. The main increase in the volume of combat sorties is observed in the Donetsk and Zaporozhye directions. Among other things, there have been significant successes of Russian aviation, accompanied by the destruction of equipment and manpower. Unfortunately, there is little and will not be more video evidence of this, as the routes and targets hit by aircraft are classified information and are not allowed to be published in the public domain.

Work of Russian Air Force in the Donetsk direction:

Despite the danger for Russian units in defensive actions due to the numerical superiority of the AFU in certain parts of the front, the situation could change fundamentally with continued shelling and destruction of Ukrainian ammunition.
