VERA FILES FACT CHECK: Video FALSELY claims 80-year-olds can now get P100,000

A Facebook (FB) video claimed that 80-year-old Filipino citizens can now claim their P100,000 centenary allowance. Not true.

Posted by FB page Pinas Update on June 3, the video carried a caption that read:

“Good news ito kay lola at lolo (for grandmothers and grandfathers), senior citizens 80 year old pwede na tumangap nang 100k (can now receive P100,000).”

Under Sec. 2 of Republic Act (RA) No. 10868 or the Centenarians Act of 2016, a P100,000 cash gift shall be given to citizens who reach 100 years of age. There is, however, a proposed amendment to RA 10868 that seeks to distribute the P100,000 cash in three equal tranches.

Under Senate Bill (SB) No. 2029, the cash will be given to Filipinos upon reaching the ages of 80, 90 and 100 years old. This means one gets one-third of the P100,000 from the time they hit 80. The bill has yet to be scheduled for second reading in the Senate. It will undergo more steps before becoming law. (READ: How a bill becomes a law)

The video with the false claim only showed the plenary speeches of senators Imee Marcos, Ramon Revilla Jr., and Sherwin Gatchalian in support of SB 2029 during a March 22 plenary session

It has so far garnered a total of 2.1 million interactions. Pinas Update was created on Oct. 29, 2022.
