On June 25, four Syrian police officers were killed and another was wounded after being ambushed near the town of Muzayrib in the western Daraa countryside.

Citing a source in Daraa Police Command, the official Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) said that the police officers were on their way from Daraa city to the town of Tafas in the western countryside to guard students doing their end of year exams when they were ambushed by unidentified militants.

“The terrorists fired heavily at the patrol, which caused the death and injury of its members, then they fled,” the unnamed source said.

A second source in Daraa National Hospital told SANA that the officer who survived the ambush was in a critical condition.

No group has claimed responsibility for the deadly attack, so far. However, ISIS is known to be active in the western Daraa countryside. The terrorist group’s cells carried out several attacks near Muzayrib and Tafas in the past.

In May, Syrian security forces eliminated two senior ISIS leaders in an ambush between the Tafas and the town of Athman in the northern Daraa countryside.

The deadly attack near Muzayrib came three weeks after the authorities launched a new reconciliation process in Daraa. The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a pro-opposition monitoring group, said that thousands of locals had joined the process.
