ISIS cells in Syria’s vast central region carried out ten attacks against government forces and civilians over the last 30 days, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported on May 29.
The London-based monitoring group said that four of the attacks took place in the eastern Homs countryside, another four in the western Deir Ezzor countries and the remaining two were in the southern Raqqa countryside and the southern countryside of Aleppo.
As a result of the attacks, 24 service members and pro-government fighters were killed along with two civilians and an unidentified person, according to the SOHR.
The monitoring group added that two terrorists of ISIS were killed by government forces during combing operations in the central region.
The most notable recent attack by ISIS targeted a base near the town of al-Sukhan in the eastern Homs countryside, where Syrian and Russian troops were deployed. Some 150 terrorists participated in the attack, which took place on May 25.
The attack was repelled. However, Russian Colonel Oleg Pechevisty lost his life along with other four officers during the clashes. The Russian Aerospace Forces responded by launching a series of airstrikes against ISIS hideouts in the eastern Homs countryside.
Syrian government forces and their allies stepped up operations against ISIS cells in the central region in the last few weeks. However, the group’s presence in the region is still strong, likely as a result of the support the terrorists are receiving from their comrades in United States-controlled areas in the northeastern region and al-Tanf garrison in the southeastern region.
