Israel and its allies foiled more than 50 Iranian plots to carry out attacks against Israelis and Jews across the world in recent years, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said on July 13.
“In recent years, Iran has been leading a worldwide terror campaign, with unprecedented scope, targeting Israelis and Jews around the world,” Gallant told reporters during an official trip to Azerbaijan, according to The Times of Israel.
Most of the Iranian plots were foiled at the “last moment,” according to the Israeli minister, who didn’t provide any further details.
“Thanks to our defense establishment, thanks to close cooperation with many countries, and thanks to the understanding that Iran is a global threat, we foiled these attempts and saved lives,” Gallant added.
Israel accused Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of planning attacks against its citizens and Jews abroad on several occasions in the last few years.
In June, the Israeli Mossad intelligence agency announced that it had captured an IRGC agent who plotted attacks against Israeli targets in Cyprus. The agency said that the agent, identified as Yousef Shahbazi Abbasalilo, was captured during a special operation inside Iran.
It’s worth noting that Israel itself was accused by Tehran of a series of sabotage attacks and assassinations that targeted the Iranian military industrial complex and nuclear program as well as prominent scientists and senior commanders from the country.
Gallant’s claims indicate that the shadow war between the two countries is heating up. This could have some serious consequences on the security of the Middle East.
