Largest Chinese naval training ship visits Manila

Qi Jiguang, the largest and most advanced naval training vessel by the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) arrived June 14 for a four-day goodwill port call, the first since 2019.

Chinese ambassador Huang Xilian was on hand to welcome the ship commanded by Rear Admiral Su Yinsheng at Pier 15 South Manila Port.

Commodore Carlo Lagasca of the Philippine Naval Littoral Combat Force was joined by several Navy officers in welcoming the officers and crew of Qi Jiguang. Members of the Filipino-Chinese community gave a colorful welcome complete with a lion dance.

Named after a Chinese Ming Dynasty (circa 16th century) hero navy officer, Qi Jiguang is 163 meters long, 22 meters wide, has a full load displacement of more than 9,000 tons, and has a maximum speed of 22 knots, which can meet the requirements for wind resistance of grade 12.

It was designed and built by China and commissioned in 2017.

The training Ship will also host open-day activities including a deck reception.

Before coming to Manila, Qi Jiguang visited Vietnam, Thailand and Brunei.
