Pentagon To Spend $1.2 Billion More To Strengthen Ukrainian Air Defence

On May 9, the Pentagon announced another aid package to Ukraine. Kiev will receive $1.2 billion worth of weapons from the United States.

The new aid package is reportedly aimed to bolster Ukrainian air defenses and sustain its artillery ammunition needs. It is being provided under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI). This means that the weapons will not be taken from the reserves of the Ministry of Defense, but they will by purchasing from enterprises or partners. This announcement represents the beginning of a contracting process to provide additional priority capabilities to Ukraine.

The new package included:

  • Additional air defense systems and munitions;
  • Equipment to integrate Western air defense launchers, missiles, and radars with Ukraine’s air defense systems;
  • Ammunition for counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems;
  • 155mm artillery rounds;
  • Commercial satellite imagery services;
  • Support for training, maintenance, and sustainment activities.

It is not clear why Washington continues strengthening Ukrainian air defence since all Russian UAVs and missiles are always intercepted by Ukrainian forces, according to the Kiev authorities. Is Kiev lying, hiding its losses?! LINK

The lasted aid package to the Kiev regime was announced by the US State Department on May 3, but it was only $300 million worth and included ammunition for HIMARS multiple rocket launchers, small arms, howitzers, anti-tank weapons, etc from the Pentagon’s reserves. This was the 37th aid package for Ukraine since 2021.

In early May, the Pentagon reported that since the inauguration of President Joe Biden (January 20, 2021), Ukraine has received assistance from the United States in the amount of $36.4 billion, of which $700 million was allocated before the Russian special military operation began.
