VERA FILES FACT CHECK: The world will NOT be dark for 3 straight days

A Facebook (FB) Reel claimed that the earth will be covered in darkness for three days starting April 8. This is false.

“The news… is a hoax. There is no scientific evidence to support its existence, and its origins are unclear,” the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said in its March 31 astronomical diary

The video specifically claimed that darkness will occur as the Earth passes through the Photon Belt, blocking sunlight, moonlight, and starlight. Not true.

“This idea originated with the New Age and metaphysical circles… [it] lacks scientific evidence and is considered pseudoscientific by the scientific community,” the state weather bureau added.

However, a total solar eclipse will indeed occur on April 8 over North America, crossing Mexico, the United States and Canada, according to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)

Total solar eclipse means that the moon completely blocks the Sun’s light for a few minutes. This occurs when the moon passes between the sun and the earth, casting a shadow along a path, according to NASA’s Space Place.

Posted by an FB netizen, the erroneous video garnered 34,500 reactions, 157 comments, and 33,000 shares.
