A Facebook (FB) Reel making the rounds online claims to show various footage of how “fake eggs” are being made in China. These clips have been given false context.
A netizen published the Reel on July 6 with the caption: “Fake Eggs from China”. It spliced together the following:
- a clip of white eggs rolling on a conveyor belt for coating with a thick, light brown substance; and
- another clip of people pouring slime-like substance inside a transparent egg-shaped case.
A reverse image search revealed that these videos were given untrue contexts. The first clip shows how century eggs are made and the second shows a production of toy eggs.
The first clip was published on Kuaishou, a Chinese social network where users can upload short-form videos, by a user called 豪哥五香变蛋 (Hao Ge Five Spice Egg). It has published similar videos showing how their factory makes their own specialty preserved eggs.
The second clip shows toy eggs, not supposedly fake eggs being marketed as real ones according to several Chinese articles debunking the claim.
Other fact-checking organizations have belied similar false claims.
This erroneous FB reel continued to circulate this week as the Armed Forces of the Philippines spotted a fleet of Chinese vessels near Iroquois Reef and Sabina Shoal in the West Philippine Sea during a recent air patrol.
The FB netizen’s short video has garnered over 13,300 reactions, 2,100 comments, 17,000 shares and 2 million views.
