VERA FILES FACT CHECK: Video on South Korea giving a submarine to Philippine Navy MISLEADS

A video falsely implied in its headline that South Korea will provide both a submarine and a corvette – a small warship – to the Philippines.

First uploaded to YouTube and then on Facebook (FB) on Nov. 25, the video bore this claim in its headline:

“PILIPINAS may PASABOG sa CHINA, NAVY sinuri ang SUBMARINE at CORVETTE na ibibigay ng SOUTH KOREA (The Philippines has a bombshell on China; Navy inspected a submarine and a corvette that South Korea will give way)”

This is misleading. The South Korean government is only set to turn over the Pohang-class corvette ROKS Andong (PCC 771) to the Philippines, according to multiple news reports.

VERA Files Fact Check: The South Korean government has not promised to turn over a submarine to the Philippines.

However, South Korea is handing over ROKS Andong - a corvette or small warship - to the Philippine Navy.

The video with the misleading headline appeared a day after the Philippine Navy reported that Vice Admiral Toribio Adaci Jr. visited the Jinhae naval base in South Korea.

Adaci inspected ROKS Yun Bong-Gil (SS 077), a Type-214 1,800-ton submarine. The press release did not say that a submarine would be turned over to the Philippines.

South Korean shipbuilding company Hanwha Ocean pitched an offer last September to build a pair of submarines for the Philippine Navy, news reports stated.

The misleading video, posted by YouTube channel GOOD News Philippines (created on July 29, 2018) and reuploaded by an FB page of the same name (created on Sept. 23, 2019), garnered a total of over 253,341 interactions.
