Water privatization benefits oligarchs, burdens consumers under Marcos – IBON Foundation

Water privatization continues under the Marcos Jr administration, enabling oligarch- and foreign-owned Maynilad Water Services (Pangilinan, Consunji) and Manila Water Company (Razon, Ayala) to reap soaring profits despite persistent service issues.

Maynilad and Manila Water’s net incomes nearly tripled. Meanwhile, consumers face rate hikes, with many urban poor households forced to pay Php1,000-2,000 monthly due to lack of direct connections. Water districts under joint venture agreements (JVAs) with private firms have also reported steep water rate increases despite complaints of murky, intermittent supply.
