Statement of the ILPS
ALL ALERT! The International League of Peoples’ Struggle (ILPS) vehemently condemns the unjust detention and cruel torture of prominent Palestinian doctor Hussam Abu Safiya at the hands of the Zionists. We call for his immediate release, alongside all illegally detained Palestinians, and demand that he be provided with urgent medical care. Dr. Safiya’s life is now in grave danger at the notorious “Rakefet” underground solitary confinement interrogation facility in Nitzan Prison, where he has been illegally detained without charge for more than 555 days and subjected to daily beatings, psychological and physical torture, sexual abuse, malnutrition, humiliation, and severe medical neglect since being transferred there on June 24, 2026.
Since 1967, over one million Palestinians have been detained by the Zionist entity of “Israel.” As of today, there are over 11,000 Palestinian prisoners, a number that more than doubled after October 7, 2023. With over 20% of Palestine’s population seeing the inside of a jail cell and the illegal occupation’s policy of trying Palestinians in military courts instead of judicial ones, the struggle for a free Palestine is intertwined with the fight for the inalienable rights and liberation of political prisoners. In particular, healthcare workers have been targeted disproportionately since the beginning of the genocide, with 1,700 healthcare workers killed by the Zionist entity since October 7, 2023, averaging to over 1 healthcare worker killed per day. Additionally, 446 healthcare workers have been unlawfully detained by the Zionist entity in this timeframe, 6 of whom have been killed within ‘Israeli’ detention as well.
It must also be noted that the Zionist policy of targeting, detaining and torturing healthcare workers, as caretakers and defenders of life, is intrinsic to it’s settler colonial ambitions of erasure and Greater Israel expansionist agenda. At least 135 healthcare workers have been killed in the Zionist entity’s genocidal assault on Lebanon, among the over 4,300 martyrs since March 2026. Lebanese political prisoners are also held hostage within it’s network of torture camps.
The Zionist entity is intensifying its fascist, barbaric treatment of political prisoners. In the past days, a number of prisoners have died while some those on being released survived just a few days due to the long-term inhuman treatment received while detained. With the passage of the recent death penalty law that applies solely to Palestinian prisoners, there has been unfettered abuse and unspeakable conditions enacted on them by ‘Israeli’ prison authorities. The only solution remains to end the occupation once and for all, releasing all political prisoners like Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya now.
The League joins the hundreds of medical professionals, human rights organizations and activists globally demanding for immediate international protection, medical attention, and the urgent release of Dr. Safiya now!
