Hezbollah Infiltrated Lebanese Army, Intelligence - Report

Hezbollah has infiltrated the Lebanese army and intelligence, Al-Arabiya reported on June 24, citing Western sources with knowledge on the matter.

The source told the Saudi-owned news channel that Hezbollah had recruited “agents” within Lebanon’s intelligence services and took advantage of military aid recently supplied to the Lebanese army by the West.

“Over the past year, the group [Hezbollah] has infiltrated intelligence equipment for the Lebanese army through an agent,” the source said, identifying the alleged agent only by his initials “H.M.”

Hezbollah also gained access to the radar systems of Beirut Airport and the Lebanese Navy, according to the unnamed sources.

After the outbreak of the war in Syria, the United States and other Western countries increased military aid to the Lebanese army. Earlier this year, Washington announced that it will reroute $72 million in aid to Lebanon to pay wages in order to help service members cope with the financial crisis that badly hit the local currency.

Hezbollah has not yet commented on the report of Al-Arabiya, which regularly releases reports condemning the Lebanese group.

Western military aid to Lebanon was viewed by some sides in the country as an attempt to drive a wedge between the army and Hezbollah. However, the two continue to cooperate and coordinate, especially when it comes to the front with Israel in the south, or with security on the border with Syria.
