Hiroshima G7 Summit, instrument of US Imperialism

May 20, 2023

Press Statement

19 May 2023

The Migrants’ Commission, Commission 15, of the International League of People’s Struggle (ILPS), the anti-imperialist alliance of grassroots organizations of workers, farmers and other exploited and oppressed sectors of society, join the migrants and peoples of the world in protesting the G7 Summit in Hiroshima, Japan on May 19-21.

The G7 — composed of Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK and the US — is the alliance of the most developed economies of the world led by US imperialism. It is a primary instrument of US imperialist domination of the globe, and as such also involves entities like the International Monetary Fund or IMF and the World Trade Organization or WTO.

The topics that will be discussed in the summit — Taiwan and China, Ukraine and Russia, North Korea, among others — show the foremost geopolitical interest of US imperialism at present: fight superpowers that pose a threat to its domination and hegemony, as well as countries that exercise their national sovereignty and refuse to bow down to it.

In these conflicts, the US depicts itself as leading the fight of democracy against authoritarianism, of independence against superpower bullies. The truth is that it has attacked genuine democratic struggles and favored authoritarians that are US puppets; it has acted as the world’s policeman and subordinated the peoples of the world.

US imperialism is the No. 1 enemy of struggles for genuine democracy and national sovereignty in the world. It has continuously fomented war and prepared for war, to the detriment of world peace. It has exploited, dominated and underdeveloped many countries and hindered independent development, in the interest of monopoly-capitalist super profits.

The G7 Summit will be held in Hiroshima to supposedly highlight the evils of war. This pathetic spin will not hide the fact that the US dropped a nuclear bomb on that island in 1945 to proclaim its power and intimidate its potential enemies, especially the Soviet Union. The summit venue is nothing less than a veiled threat to the enemies of US imperialism, even as it exposes US imperialist ruthlessness and war crimes.

It has been reported that the summit will discuss nuclear disarmament, which will surely mean forcing disarmament on other countries, not on France, the UK, the US, and their allies. The summit will also discuss Artificial Intelligence or AI, digitalization and ChatGPT, as if G7 shares the apprehensions and fears of the migrants and peoples of the world, and does not use these for greater profits and control.

US imperialism is the No. 1 enemy of the migrants and peoples of the world, and ILPS Commission 15 — devoted to the rights and welfare of the diaspora, refugees and migrant workers displaced by imperialism and local reactionaries — vows to intensify its struggle against it. It lies at the root causes of migration, the precarity of migration and migrant work, and the wars and conflicts that often victimize migrants.

We protest the G-7 Summit!
Down with US imperialism and its instruments!
Long live the migrants and peoples of the world!
