ISIS Shares Photos From Recent Attacks In Iraq

On April 20, ISIS’s official news agency, Amaq, released photos documenting two recent attacks by the terrorist group’s cells in Iraq.

The first set of photos show an attack by ISIS terrorists against a military position along a road between the towns of Baiji and Haditha in the central province of Saladin on April 10. The terrorists targeted the positions with assault rifles and rocket-propelled grenades during the hit-and-run attack. Amaq said that a soldier was wounded and a surveillance camera was destroyed.

The remaining photos show a mortar attack on a military position near the town of Rutba in the western province of al-Anbar on April 14.

Iraq announced the defeat of ISIS in 2017. However, the terrorist group’s cells are still waging an insurgency in different parts of the country.

Today, the terrorist group is mainly active in Saladin, al-Anbar as well as the northern province of Kirkuk and the eastern province of Diyala.

The Iraqi military stepped up operations against ISIS over the past year. The air force became more involved in the hunt of the group’s cells. At least nine terrorists were killed in two waves of airstrikes that hit hideouts in Diyala and Kirkuk earlier this month.

Despite recent efforts, ISIS insurgency in Iraq will not likely end in the near future. The terrorist group will likely maintain some presence in the country for the long term.
