‘Para sa Bading 2024’ advocates for the elderly queer

June 8, 2024

For certain fan groups, Pride Month should be celebrated with a cause. Which is why on the second iteration of ‘Para sa Bading,’ Cult of Joe and Any Over Ridleys Community are set to raise funds for the Home for the Golden Gays, an organization dedicated to support elderly LGBTQIA+ persons.

“In the tapestry of society, the elderly often find themselves woven into the fringes, their stories fading into the background noise of modern life.  Forgotten, neglected, and marginalized, these individuals, who once shaped the world we live in, now face a profound sense of isolation and invisibility. Yet, amidst the darkness of neglect, there exists a glimmer of hope. Community-based programs—like Para sa Bading, are springing up to address the needs of the elderly and combat the scourge of neglect,” Cult of Joe states.

Cult of Joe and Any Over Ridleys Community, fan groups of OPM bands Cup of Joe and Any Name’s Okay, Over October, and The Ridleys, respectively, will hold a fund-raising gig on June 15 at the Pride Kickoff Party at 123 Block, Mandala Park, Mandaluyong City. Notable OPM acts including The Ridleys, Sugarcane, Over October, Earl Generao, Huni, Dom Guyot, Kio Priest, Beatriz Rosaluna, and Stef Aranas are set to perform in this event.

Cult of Joe, on June 1 and 2, also organized an outdoor film screening at Street Kohi which featured movies tackling queer struggles and perspectives. In 2023, the first ever Para sa Bading was organized to raise funds for jeepney drivers and operators facing the threat of PUV phaseout.

From being fans of Cup of Joe attending their gigs, Cult of Joe now organizes events with a cause, believing in the importance of contributing something good into our society:

“Our community strongly believes that there should be inclusivity for all—especially for our LGBTQIA+. We are aware that communities like these can make an impact because of our population. We believe we can amplify our advocacies all while uplifting the OPM scene—hence, we conduct projects like PSB (Para sa Bayan & Para sa Bading). To us, we must use our platform to push forth our beliefs, and the beliefs that our artists live by—like how they support the approval of the SOGIE Bill. We are individuals who are passionate about bringing about positive change to our community.”

Prices for the Pride Kickoff Party on June 15 are set at PHP750 for students and PHP850 for regular gig goers. Check out the full details here.
