Foreign ministers of Syria, Egypt, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Jordan are set to meet on May 1 in the Jordanian capital of Amman to continue consultations on Syria’s return to the Arab League, the Jordanian Foreign Ministry announced on April 30.

The meeting follows a similar gathering held in the Saudi city of Jeddah early this month and “builds on the contacts that these countries made with the Syrian government”, Sinan Majali, a spokesman for the ministry, said.

Syria’s membership in the Arab League was suspended when the war first broke out more than a decade ago. The decision was meant to support the rebels.

During the last meeting in Jeddah, foreign ministers of the Gulf Cooperation Council and Egypt, Iraq and Jordan discussed Syria’s possible return to the organization as well as a peace initiative for the war-torn country that was presented by Amman.

Efforts to readmit Syria to the Arab League gained momentum after Saudi Arabia decided to restore relations with the country earlier this month. The kingdom foreign minister visited Damascus on April 18 and held a meeting with President Bashar al-Assad.

Arab countries are not the only side working on fixing relations with Syria. Last week, the defense ministers and intelligence chiefs of Damascus and Ankara met in Moscow as a part of a normalization process sponsored by Russia and Iran.

The foreign ministers of the two countries, who have been at odds since the start of the Syrian war, are set to meet sometime next month, possibly before the Turkish general elections that will be held on May 14.

Despite continued attempts by the United States, United Kingdom and European Union to isolate Syria, the country is slowly, but surely reclaiming its position on both the Arab and regional stages.
