On May 25, two pro-government fighters were killed when terrorists believed to be members of ISIS opened fire at a vehicle of the Palestinian al-Quds Brigade in Syria’s central region.
The attack took place on a road in the desert area of al-Sharah in the eastern Homs countryside. Several other fighters of al-Quds Brigade were reportedly wounded during the ambush. ISIS is yet to officially claim responsibility via the Amaq news agency.
The ambush was the most recent in a series of terrorist attacks in central Syria, which were attributed to ISIS cells in the region.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a London-based pro-opposition monitoring group, violence in the central region has claimed the lives of 324 people since the beginning of the year.
The monitoring group’s number includes 14 ISIS terrorists who were killed by the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and its allies, 161 service members and pro-government fighters who lost their lives in terrorists attacks and 148 civilians who were killed by terrorists while hunting for truffles, herding sheep or traveling in the region.
The SAA and its allies conducted a few combing operations in the central region in the last few months. However, ISIS cells are still very active, especially in the eastern Hama countryside and the eastern countryside of Homs.
The recent increase in ISIS activities in the region may be the result of unusual bad weather conditions that limited the ability to monitor and target terrorists there. It is also possible that the group has been receiving additional support via its cells in the northeastern region and the southeastern area of al-Tanf, where the United States-led coalition and its proxies are in control.
